In collaboration with and supported by Abu Dhabi Music and Art Foundation (ADMAF), CAAD will be hosting six lectures that are part of ADMAF’s Riwaq al Fikr series. Lectures will be delivered online to an audience of university design students and the general public. Please save these dates in your calendar. Pre-register using link in our bio. Riwaq Al Fikr offers insightful dialogue among thinkers, cultural leaders and the general public through discussion and debate. They explore diverse contemporary issues with global cultural leaders. Congratulations to our architecture alumna Mays Albaik @maysalbeik on her upcoming solo exhibition ‘A Terranean Love Note’ opening on January 12th, 2020. The exhibition is a culmination of Albaik’s year-long research and development on the Critical Practice Programme 2020 at @tashkeelstudio with mentors Ala Younes @alayounis and Lawrence Abu Hamdan @lawrenceabuhamdan . Through spatial interventions, sculpture and video work, ‘A Terranean Love Note’ explores moments of contact between the self and placehood – constructed sites of physical residence, digital spaces or ancestral homelands. The works triangulate body, language and space by layering a personal poetics onto the social politics that define our relationship to geography. Find out more at tashkeel.org. Book to visit at tashkeel@tashkeel.org. #CAADSquad #caadgrads #caadaus #creativecommunity #CAADalumni #maysalbaik #solo #tashkeel

Autonomous Cities / Shifa Aaquil / Highly Commended Architecture & Design / Global Undergraduate Awards / American University of Sharjah / UAE This project explores architectural design and construction in a harsh climate that is impenetrable by human beings. The architectural proposal is a simple drawing machine that is placed on the site. The machine then moves on site, detecting the presence of salt and water. As it is detecting, it draws on the surface of the earth. These drawings produce visual data of the elements on the site: the denser the drawing, the deeper is the presence of water and salt. At this point, the data can be used by researchers and designers to take control of the design process, or the process can be autonomized further. If autonomized, the pre-programmed machine excavates in the densest, or deepest, parts. These excavations create the first kind of inhabitable space. With the excavated salt and water, the machine extrudes a scaffold, essentially a 3D print of a salt-water mixture, above ground. These extrusions form the second type of inhabitable space. The extruded spaces are temporal, mainly created to extract the salt from the ground and allow the future inhabitants to utilize it. Lifted / Habibah Salman / Highly Commended Architecture & Design / Global Undergraduate Awards / American University of Sharjah / UAE Hidden and buried underground, roots are a silent part of the environment which can be easily undermined, discredited, or forgotten. They stabilize the plant by building a network that spreads underground and keeps it from being swept away in times of heavy rainfall or soil erosion. And so, a series of models were created to explore how light material like wood can carry heavy concrete forms. To keep the two primary materials -wood and concrete- from merging, a layer of fabric was placed between the two before casting, contributing to the organic sections within the project. The proposal creates a kind of architecture that is taken over, demonstrating the ever-growing relationship between the built and the animate. Farida Foda's @faridafoda capstone project "Glitched" won an award from The Phaistos Project — Forty-five Symbols @45symbols competition as one of four winning projects. “Glitched” was a part of VIS406 course under the mentorship of Professor Hala Al-Ani @halalani . The jury mentioned that Foda’s “45 visuals come from a modified and increasingly corrupted image, showing the potential and versatility of minimal irregularities in code as a design tool. In the age of digital transformation, where it seems like image imperfection may become extinct, the artist questions the associated devaluation of our own flawed human imperfections. With only small changes in the genome, innumerable possibilities and interpretations of a single image arise and turn seemingly unaesthetic irregularities into fluid beauty, an imperfect perfection.” #CAADSquad #caadgrads #caadaus #creativecommunity #designproject #designschool #creativeprocess #glitch #45symbols #fortyfivesymbols #thePhaistosproject #winningproject #entry #portfolio #CAADalumni #faridafoda

Dubai Design Week 2020 Highlights✨ Here’s a throwback to DDW 2020 highlighting our brilliant alumnus Mohamed Rowaizak’s project “Pilgrim Bottle” Description: Pilgrim Bottle reflects on the existence lived by early Arab settlers. It is a simple utilitarian vessel, that is functional and durable. Pilgrim Bottle, as part of the Pilgrim Series, is entirely handmade; which may count for small variations in shape. Formally, the design is inspired from traditional attention to details in traveler’s water containers. The add-ons are from camel leather, and the packaging is fully handmade recycled paper #dubaidesignweek #design #architecture #d3 #dubaidesigndistrict #caad #caadalumni
