In Our Schools: More area schools participated in a Day of Service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. . . Hopewell Valley Central High School: Sarah Cleveland, Gavin Fowler, and Samuel Fowler, were looking for a special way to celebrate MLK Day in their community. Through their many years in Scouting, the three teens had volunteered for many projects with their troops. This time, they wanted to find a fun way to connect community members of all ages with the many nonprofits in the area. “We hope to raise awareness of the great work that these organizations are doing and the many ways that people of all ages can help,” said Sarah. . . Fifty volunteers of all ages spent three hours rotating between five activity stations: making 266 bags of chocolate chip cookies for TASK, fourteen fleece blankets for The Rescue Mission of Trenton, and 420 seed bombs for the Sourland Conservancy. For Seeds to Sew, the group organized 830 bags sewn by women in Kenya and decorated over 300 gift bags. In addition to working at the stations, volunteers also donated $85, over 80 pounds of canned goods for Mercer Street Friends and 100 warm winter coats for the Rescue Mission of Trenton. --------------------------------- . The Hun School of Princeton: More than 100 Hun Middle Schoolers fanned out to eight area charities on Jan. 10 to do a variety of tasks, including sorting toys for kids in need, shopping for a food pantry, and visiting nursing home patients. Students visited HomeFront, Mercer Street Friends in Ewing; Community Kitchen in Princeton; the HomeFront Freestore, Threads of Hope, and Arm in Arm in Trenton; Jewish Family & Children’s Services in Lawrenceville; and Meadow Lakes nursing home in East Windsor.

In Our Schools: For the second year in a row, Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart second grader Sandro Cunningham has set up Sandro’s Coat Rack outside of Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. The model is simple: If you are cold, take one. Do you want to help? Leave one.” His initiative speaks to the Sacred Heart Goals, in particular, Goal 3, a social awareness which impels to action.
