Tableya is back in stock!! We received this special delivery with our latest shipment of cocoa beans from Davao, Philippines last week. These coin-shaped discs not only make our favorite chocolate drink, they also provide school lunches to students in the same area where we source our cocoa beans. It’s an annual summer tradition. This is our seventh year working with the students at the Missouri Public Affairs Academy, a program that brings together the top high school students from across the state to learn to become citizens who work together “for the greater good”! Groups of students are visiting the factory today for tours led by @shawnaskinosie and lots of chocolate samples, of course.
Take a gander at this sundae from our friends @vanleeuwenicecream, topped with our roasted cocoa nibs. July is #nationalicecreammonth and we’re here to say we ❤️ our awesome ice cream partners. #regram / pic by @joyysterr
If you’ve followed Askinosie for awhile, you’ve probably heard talk about “visioning”. It’s a kind of goal-setting process we adapted from our good friend Ari W. of Zingerman’s, that we share with our Chocolate University students, cocoa farmers, and more. Back in 2012, @shawnaskinosie began helping our Mababu farmer partners draft the Vision for their co-op. Five years later, the farmers are accomplishing steps of the Vision one-by-one (like building an office!). One each origin trip, we work with the farmers on their Vision: what challenges are they facing, what successes, and what next steps can we take? Here’s Shawn’s report from the visioning session last week in Tanzania: I interspersed chocolate-tasting throughout our day-long Vision discussion (which ended with the profit share). We’d go down the list one by one on their Vision planks and in between, we’d taste a different chocolate. Early on in the morning though, I handed out these simple leather bracelets to each farmer. I shared that they were our gift from our factory--that we hoped when they looked at it, they would be reminded of their Vision. After that, at each Vision point, we all held up our braceleted arms together as we recited the Vision point in unison in Swahili. #origintripTanzania

After wrapping up his Tanzania trip last week, @shawnaskinosie took a quick detour to Madagascar before heading home! For now, the details are top-secret. 😉 But stay tuned for updates on a new project we’re working on with factory-friend and chocolate enthusiast, Zeke Emmanuel!!
A little single origin 72% Mababu, Tanzania Dark Chocolate #MondayMotivation by way of this lovely regram from @beanbaryou!
While in Mababu, Tanzania this week, @shawnaskinosie spent time with the inspiring young women and men in our Empowered Girls and Enlightened Boys clubs. We initiated these programs to foster conversation on important topics like self esteem, visioning and goal setting, sexual and reproductive health, leadership skills, cultural and gender issues, and more. Empowered Girls has grown to more than 200 young women in the last 3 years. And In less than a year, attendance for the Enlightened Boys program has skyrocketed to over 200 students! We’re amazed by the results we’re seeing (improved school attendance, improved test scores, and fewer pregnancies to name a few) and inspired by the work these students are doing to build solid foundations of both self and mutual respect. #origintripTanzania
🌟🏅🌟We’re 2017 International Chocolate Award Winners! 🌟🏅🌟 Our beloved “El Rustico Bar” AKA: Crunchy Sugar Crystals + Vanilla Bean CollaBARation™ Bar took home gold! And the latest release in our Limited Edition 1098 Line, our “Dirty” White Chocolate + Vintage Cocoa Gravel Bar, was awarded bronze. We were blown away by the company we were in this year. So much great craft chocolate, so little time.
Pictured: Mama Mpoki-- lead cocoa farmer, featured on our Tanzania chocolate bars--spreading prized cocoa beans on the drying pad beside her husband, Mr Livingston. Not pictured: the inspiring little and big moments from #origintripTanzania. Little moments like singing and dancing and celebrating. Like @shawnaskinosie working with the farmers on the next steps for their Vision Plan, while inside of the office they built last year... which was the first tenet of their Vision! Or tasting chocolate made by our collective hands--theirs and ours--and celebrating a recent award together. Direct Trade can’t just be described by pictures and words, we like to think you can taste it too. These beans are soon headed to an Askinosie chocolate bar near you! 👊 #askinosie
