While he was in the Philippines last week, @shawnaskinosie presented a certificate to Peter, our lead farmer partner, commemorating the recent 2017 @goodfoodawards recognition for our Dark Milk + Black Licorice CollaBARation™ Bar, which was made from beans sourced directly from Davao, Philippines! This is Direct Trade. We’re all in this together! #origintripDavao
Today we celebrate a special holiday called Paul Kiry Day in honor of every buyer, store owner, and retail partner across the country who helps us share our story. We choose to work directly with each of these people--not just cocoa farmers--because we can all benefit from a greater understanding about where our chocolate comes from, how its made, and the folks behind the bars. Thank YOU! See the full story on our FB today.
@shawnaskinosie here with a long update from Davao, Philippines on our Sustainable Lunch Programs. Last week I visited two of our partner schools: Malagos and Baguio Elementary. With the help of the PTA’s at these schools--and the sale of Tableya--we’ve been providing lunch to each student, every school day. 2016 was our fifth and final year assisting Malagos; we’re thrilled to report that the school is operating completely independently now! Our intention for these programs is for the schools to eventually transition away from dependence on our assistance. My visit to Malagos was inspiring. They are doing this program 100% on their own. The PTA remains very involved– sourcing and preparing all of the meals. I am proud there is no building named after us or an Askinosie logo painted on the wall. There’s no evidence we’ve been there, except our continued friendship. I am super happy because this is the definition of sustainability. The coolest part of all of this? We worked with Malagos to teach another school how to implement this program: Baguio Elementary! I visited Baguio on Parents Day and spoke during the assembly, encouraging the parents to keep up the great work. We began the lunch program in June 2016 and the results are already astonishing. At start of school year, Baguio had 95 malnourished students (we use World Health Organization standards) and now there are only FOUR!! And that continues to improve. Attendance has also skyrocketed. We’re excited to see the amount of change that has occurred at Malagos, and to be a part of this same influence at Baguio. Our A Product of Change™ model targets 3-5 year relationships with partner school PTA groups. After the PTA becomes proficient producing the product, they are able to take over product sales and distribution. Learn more about our A Product of Change™ program and purchase Tableya here: askinosie.com!
Update from Davao, Philippines! @shawnaskinosie spent the last 2 days inspecting our next shipment of cocoa beans to ensure they meet our contract specifications. This includes spending time on the farms, performing cut tests to check moisture content and even roasting some beans over an open fire. And of course, sharing profits! Pictured is our lead cocoa farmer (who you might recognize from our packaging), Peter Cruz, and the Co-op Chair, after having just signed the profit share agreement, with cash in hand! #origintripDavao
@shawnaskinosie has arrived in Davao, Philippines! He’s currently working with our lead farmer partner, Peter Cruz (pictured), inspecting our next shipment. Look at all those gorgeous cocoa beans! 😍#origintripDavao
If you’re currently in a red and pink glitter heart hangover (us too), we’d suggest taking a few moments to appreciate the one of the most adorable photos we’ve seen in recent days. Thanks for sharing this gold, @postcoffeecompany!
This isn’t just another Valentine’s Day post, it’s a handy guide to making sure your February 14th is a sweet one. If you find yourself in need of plans for this evening, might we suggest picking up a jar of our Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and doing one (or more!) of the following: -Drizzle on fresh strawberries -Blend in a milkshake -Spread on a crusty baguette -Enjoy with a spoon, right out of the jar (and after you've polished off a jar, add some ice cream to that empty jar and saveur every last bit!)
Word to the wise for Valentine’s prep: our factory storefront is open until 5:30pm today. We got your back, procrastinators! 👋 Not local? No worries! You can find #askinosie in an awesome store near you by searching your zip code on our store locator at askinosie.com/locations.
There’s not much that can top a good #askinosie brownie, but a Chocolate Hazelnut Spread Fudge one (made with our own Chocolate Hazelnut Spread) just might do the trick. Perfect for enjoying with your Valentine next week, *hint hint*! Recipe shared on our facebook today.
