Isolation life; day unknown... daddy builds an addition and Thomas builds a tree fort. Best couple of days ever. This fort is built from off cuts and each board installed with 3 1/2 spriral spikes (hand banged with an IKEA hammer) and 3 screws (installed with a damn screw driver). I'd say if anything, this time with family is most certainly keeping craft alive. Thomas is building his own dream of a creation, I only cut on his marks. Ryan has learned how to square and lift walls, and is a master cleaner. Baby jack is a whizz at picking up nails and screws and simply tries to emulate everything his brothers do. It's a happy day when @chels.fulton and I have to drag them back into the house kicking and screaming. Stay safe and take advantage of this time if you are able to. #keepcraftalive #generationnext #carpentry

Sometimes, isolation means you finally have the time (to quote the boss @chels.fulton ) to isolate in your back addition and turn it into a mudroom. You that plan from before you had 3 kids. Now known as the Fulton Carpentry labour force. Today we finish the 'smash with a little luck, tomorrow lumber drop. Thanks to @kottinc for working hard to keep us safe and ready to build!

#structuralsteelsundays This is from our round house project from a few years back. 20 interlocking/mitered steel beams were installed to replace the existing wood beams. Yes, it was as intensive as you think (if you take what you think and multiply it by 100). Each beam was custom plasma cut onsite to precise measurements and angles (by the owner and his son at night!). Butt joints were done by coping the 2 pieces together; literally coping around flanges so the main webs were as tight as any wood trim joint. All joints were field welded. We used about 16 jack posts and temporary beams to remove the previous wood beams (all attached together) and then would lift the steal up 1 by 1. It was not quick, but it went smoothly. After a bout with the flu and looking through old pictures (netflix gets old after a day or so...) I have great memories of this one. Thanks to @dandy.fatkins @shawngclarke @majordesigns.ca for all their hard work out here! #steel #welding #framing #mathneverlies #geometry #renovation

#keepcraftalive Welcome aboard as an official apprentice @milesbetteridge A lot of people have used this hashtag since @finehomebuilding started using it. And it means different things to different people. @verduraconstruction 's post about teaching and bringing more people into the trades has stuck with me. With @griffiths_m successful completion of his red seal certification, I was able to finally get @milesbetteridge into the program. Get ready for the books miles! #generationnext #keepcraftalive #carpentry #redseal

The start of the soon to be master suite. Clerestory and closet area looking down at the second floor library. Rafters with plywood gussets, and 2x4 blocks to level the ceiling. A lot of work into this retreat! #fifthaveremodel #masterbedroom #framing #renovation

Most projects need hangers... some need ALL the hangers... they usually involve building a whole new house within a century home. If you work in old homes and don't own a positive placement nailer, you need to rethink whatever you think about them. #fifthaveremodel #structure #framing #oldhomes #framersareadyingbreed #engineeredlumber #ottawarenovations

Who else loves a nice newly annotated set of plans for each phase of a project?? This makes my work so much easier when we get to framing and same for my guys. It also speeds up my material take offs and helps me make note of any problems or potential issues during work. What does everyone else do to start a project off on the right foot? #jobsite #organization #paperwork #blueprints #highlighters
