In 1971, American electrical engineer Ray Tomlinson created the world’s first email system, and used the @ symbol as a stand-in for the long programming language indicating a message’s destination. The symbol has since become universal, and now exists in the public domain. In 2010, MoMA acknowledged Tomlinson’s powerful act of design by adding this priceless work to their collection.
