• This is the Maya Somaiya shardra Library in rural India , by @sameeppadora and team. For me a building as joyful as it is genuine Shot in the blazing peak Indian summer of 2018 , temperatures were well over 47 but dry and sharp
Only in India do shoots start with tea and puja ceremonies and experience has taught me to to try to become invisible in such spaces , to have plenty of time and to wait .

This project has been published more than most and I do hope the children and teachers , some of the nicest I’ve met are pleasantly bemused by all the attention

This building for me confirms two things I’ve long suspected , Firstly good architects often do better work with limited budgets and children can be the best Critics
If the joy of the space is communicated I’ll consider it one of the most successful shoots I’ve done

  • A powerful exhibition at the Hornimsn museum last night with the inspirational @simonnorfolkstudio and others tackling issues surrounding climate change.
Equally fascinating for me was the discussion of the role of art as a vehicle to raise awareness
For me the success of this series is the space it leaves. , a space for the viewer . The scene can have different meanings , different interpretations .the fact that he makes something so tragic look so darkly beautiful, visually irrational even , only ads to it
Bravo @simonnorfolkstudio

  • The flying house is situated In Daramsala Northern India designed by @martandkhosla @romi_kholsa_design_studios this was shot over 2 days in October 2018
I’ve been interested in the idea of capturing buildings using motion without the drama of a full blown video shoot #movingstills and #archygifs are techniques in distilling further many thanks to @hidrofido for his critique and reminding me of the importance of sound

  • On of my favourite parts of any shoot is the anticipation , the journey to the arrival .It’s likely you will have discussed the project in some depth and more often than not will have seen recce photographs , plans and maybe even searched on line inevitably you will have built up a mental picture of the project and how you plan to capture it but nothing compares to your first glimpse , a distant spot over a hill maybe or a view down a side street, the journey to the arrival only helps this build

Sometimes it’s counterproductive to have had too much information too many unrealistic expectations. Working 5-6000 miles away from home adds an edge an edge that I’ve long found both seductive and addictive.

Architecture, at the end of the day doesn’t move ,so if one misses something , maybe the conditions aren’t right or there are techno glitches you can always return and try again .
This is a luxury rarely experienced with overseas work, you have a day maybe two at best to get THE shot and it’s unlikely you’ll ever return , mess it up and your screwed , there is no safety net .Pressure it seems helps me focus

  • In 2008 the UK was entering the financial big dip and I was nervously battening down the hatches , a Random email arrived from Delhi based architects @morphogenesis.official after an introduction from @gianni_botsford_architects with an invitation to shoot a recently completed fashion school in Jaipur, a chance conversation with @wallpapermag team led to them including a series commissions(including the portraits of dosh @sangath_vsc_vsf and Gurjit Matharoo @matharooassociates #matharooassociates and this trip became first of 16? to date
Over the last 12 years I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most talented studios in India and many have been become friends as well as clients .

A photographers life is a privileged one , almost akin to a cultural back stage pass , you meet and interact with people that you may not have met in normal life and you see places that most wouldn’t see . Consequently one is offered an alternative and unique angle on the world one which dazzles and spins , I am thankfully
The wood house by virendra Wakhloo @matra_architects is in the village of Satkhol in Himalayas , I traveled up by car from Delhi in a gruelling 8 hour trip though biblical fog and spent my 2 days shooting it , the sweet staff of the house found it was my birthday via FB and baked me a cake ! , one of the most beautiful houses I’ve shot , want to go back with family

  • I first went to India in 1991 , young dumb and broke but with a 6 pack and hair seldom Cut
Fair to say India blew me away, at the time
I was more than convinced I was firmly on the Path to enlightenment ‘releasing my inner guru’ etc etc. looking back really I was hanging out with Fellow hippies and the main interaction with Indians was when paying the bill at hostel
it wasn’t until my many years later that I returned , retracing sketchy memories but staying in classier joints , a similar but different experience although I realised that again my main interactions with Indians were at the hotel essentially I was still a tourist
In 2008 the UK was entering the financial big dip and I was nervously battening down the hatches , a Random email arrived from Delhi based architects @morphogenesis.official with an invitation to shoot a recently completed fashion school in Jaipur, a chance conversation with @wallpapermag team led to them including a series commissions(including the portraits of dosh @sangath_vsc_vsf and @Matharoo ooassociates Gurjit Matharoo #matharooassociates and this trip became first of 16? to date
It’s a tradition as old as time to experience and understand a culture though it’s architecture and for me these commissions acted as a conduit to an inside track to essentially no longer being a tourist . Over the last 12 years I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most talented studios in India and many have been become friends as well as clients . I’ve lost track of how many shoot I’ve produced in India but feel I’m beginning to understand the country even though I still don’t know if the head roll means a yes or a no

Currently flat planning next Indian trip for Jan 2020 and over the next few posts will be showing a selection of projects shot over the last 12 years

  • One of the things I love about my job is the interaction collaboration with inspirational creatives .. increasingly clients become friends and friends clients ..the understanding of each other’s style:visual aspirations leads to successful lasting collaboration
One such character is Jason Maclean @studiomaclean whom I first met with a commission from @wallpapermag in 2006 to shoot his house that just so happened to be around the corner from my own
The house is a mid-century gem nestled in between Camberwell grove and Grove lane ,
It’s also one of the first houses @modernhouse sold
13 years on Jason and @jennyrosemaclean have reworked the space and I’ve spent many an enjoyable day munching on Jaffa cakes and capturing new views

One of the things I love about my job is the interaction collaboration with inspirational creatives .. increasingly clients become friends and friends clients ..the understanding of each other’s style:visual aspirations leads to successful lasting collaboration One such character is Jason Maclean @studiomaclean whom I first met with a commission from @wallpapermag in 2006 to shoot his house that just so happened to be around the corner from my own The house is a mid-century gem nestled in between Camberwell grove and Grove lane , It’s also one of the first houses @themodernhouse sold 13 years on Jason and @jennyrosemaclean have reworked the space again and I’ve spent many an enjoyable day munching on Jaffa cakes and capturing new views Images to follow #edmundsumner #architecture #midcenturymodern #interiordesign #camberwell #archygif #edmundsumnervideo #archyvideo

One such character is Jason Maclean @studiomaclean whom I first met with a commission from @wallpapermag in 2006 to shoot his house that just so happened to be around the corner from my own
The house is a mid-century gem nestled in between Camberwell grove and Grove lane ,
It’s also one of the first houses @themodernhouse sold
13 years on Jason and @jennyrosemaclean have reworked the space and I’ve spent many an enjoyable day munching on Jaffa cakes and capturing new views

  • I Recently realised I hadn’t updated my web site for almost 2 years so have been making amends
in some ways I l find the non chronological narrative offered by a traditional sites liberating compared to Instagram which seems obsessed with ’here n now’ the instant
Consequently I’ve found myself looking back many years and re assessing older projects and curious about how they sit with current Works both in terms of aesthetics and where my current visual interests are focused
I’ve actually found myself re introducing certain projects that I took of the site some years ago

Some seem to work again for me visually and im curious about how a project from 2007 sits with one from 2019

One such project from 2007 is the Tomihiro Art Museum
Gunma Prefecture, Japan worked on with @yukisumner
AAT + Makoto Yokomizo

One of course tries to avoid having ‘favourites’ in my work but If I did this would be one
This is project that made me realise there is no such thing as bad weather

  • I’ve often pondered the life span of the architectural image and how, over time they develop a life of their own ', a half life’ outside either the photographer or the Architects control. Typically a days shoot will yield maybe 20 shots of which 5-6 images will become key, over time these seem to natural edit down to maybe 3-4 and over time one image emerges as THE image of that project Arguably this image often isn’t the ‘right’ one more the one that magazines and blogs repeatedly use, often merely because others have used certain images.

This is of course highly subjective and different groups with different agendas look at images in different ways once a project is in circulation a successful project maybe can expect a publication life of 1-2 years and for a really successful project 3-4 years before being solidified into the brick based pantheism books offer
It’s a rare pleasure therefore to be asked to re present older projects and have more control over which images are offered and ‘reconsider' the look technically more than aesthetically
These images were taken over 13 years ago with @yukisumner and the @thearchitecturalreview of a treatment center for mentally disturbed children in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan by the as the yet unknown @sou_fujimoto
I can remember the shoot as if it was yesterday , a hauntingly powerful building designed for an equally serious purpose . The light was flat heavy and atmosphere tense. These were the dying days of shooting on film the contrast / colours way way out but aesthetically if one was to edit down to ¾ images and regrade in they are still effective . I do look at the pictures and wonder what those kids are up to #architecturedaily #architecture #architecturephotography #soufujimoto @manon.mollard #edmundsumner

  • The number 3 has increasingly taken on significance for me and my visual approach, it’s a truism and a cliche that things come is 3s but seems they do . Typically a house shoot with recce and return visits can take 3 days I like to post images in sets of 3 and try to think 3 shots ahead and always thinking of images that work as Series if 3s when I’m working in my experience a house has a publication half life of 3 years . this year 3 clients are shortlisted for the @grandesigns house of the year which is on TV tonnight 23rd Oct 9pm Channel four, best of luck all , id find it impossible to choose but am fascinated to see how they filmed them .
